Using Cloaked to: Protect your privacy when shopping in Brick and Mortar Stores

Many physical brick-and-mortar stores offer great in-store deals and promotions yet this usually comes with a catch. Usually, to get that great price or discount you will need to sign up for that store's loyalty program.

Worse still, you give the store your email address to send you an electronic copy of your receipt and they sign you up automatically for promotional and marketing emails.

But fear not! Cloaked can help!

Create a Cloaked Identity for the Store

As you get in line to check out, create a new Cloaked Identity for that store with an email address and phone number that they can use. When you get to check-out and they ask if you want to join the rewards program, you can join without fear of spam or data breaches!

Here's the best way to do so:

  1. From the Cloaked App tap on the Create icon
  2. Generate an Email Address by tapping on New email address
  3. Generate a Phone Number by tapping on New phone number
  4. Give the new Cloaked Identify the name of the store your visiting
  5. Set the forwarding settings to your preference
  6. Give the newly created email and phone number to the store as if it were your personal email or phone number.

Note: These steps would apply if you were to do this via the Cloaked Dashboard as well. Taking your laptop to the store might get you a few funny looks!

Why does this matter?

If you don't Cloak your personal info, it provides several vectors of vulnerability:

  • If the website you provide your info mistreats it, you could be hit with spam, scams, or any vulnerabilities associated with the entire internet having access to this info.
  • If this site suffers a breach or is a malicious entity, they can potentially gain vectors to access/attack your information on other sites.
  • If your personal info is breached elsewhere, it can be used to attack this site and your account within it.
  • Your personal information is a way to get to you, your family, and your entire online presence. You don't want it falling in the wrong hands.
